One dead in clash between security forces and Red Shirt protesters; 'Seh
BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) - Thailand's anti-government 'Red Shirt' United
Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) clashed with government security forces in front of the main entrance to Lumpini Park, not far from the primary Red Shirt protest site at
Ratchaprosong intersection, leaving one person dead and eight wounded.
Meanwhile, Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, a key ally of the UDD who was shot at his head during an interview with an American journalist near Saladaeng intersection, is in critical condition after brain surgery.
Bangkok Metropolitan Adminstraiton (BMA) Medical Service Department
director Dr Samart Tanariyakul said the BMA Erawan Emergency Medical Centre reported that the clash between the troops and Red Shirts at Saladaeng and a nearby checkpoint on Rama IV Road near Lumpini Park's gate four Thursday night caused one death and eight injured.
However, he said six persons were treated and released while two were
admitted at Lertsin and Police General hospitals.
The dead was identified as Mr Chartchai Bualao, 25. He was a Red Shirt
supporter who was reportedly shot in the head.
Gen Khattiya, also known by the nickname Seh Daeng, a staunch supporter of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was
transferred from Hua Chiew Hospital where he was taken first after being shot in his head and transferred to Vajira Hospital late last night.
Vajira Hospital director Dr Chaiwan Charoenchokthawee said in a telephone interview on Modernine Television that Gen Khattiya's
brain operation was successful but the general remain in critical
condition with brain edema.
Dr Chaiwan said Gen Khattiya was shot once at his head and the bullet
pierced through his skull, leaving no bullet in his head.
The hospital director said after operation Gen Khattiya's condition was better but no guarantee could be given that he would recover,
as the likelihood that he will die remains high.
Attending medical staff are closely monitoring him minute by minute, Dr Chaiwan said.
In an attempt to pressure the protesters to end their demonstration, the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) began
completely sealing off the UDD protest site by closing roads around
Bangkok's prime commercial area of Ratchaprasong where the Red
Shirt protesters have encamped more than a month.
Public transport services including buses, BTS Skytrain, the MRT
underground and passenger boats along the Saensaeb Canal are
suspended while the power supply and mobile phone signals have been cut.
Confrontation between the security forces and the protesters has been
taking place at many points around the protest site since the
