CA appealed nation to ensure optimum use of energy resources

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 11 (BSS) - Chief Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed today made an appeal to the countrymen to ensure optimum use of energy resources and avoid wastage of gas and electricity to attain energy security in the country.

He made the appeal while inaugurating a two-day National Workshop on Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Programmesat Hotel Sheraton here.

The Chief Adviser also called for applying energy-saving technologies in industries and utilization of renewable energy resources like solar and wind energy to attain a high growthrate.

"I am confident that if we can pool our human and natural resources together and optimize their utilization, Bangladesh would undoubtedly succeed in becoming a middle income country bythe year 2021," he added.

He said promotion of energy conservation and renewable energy technologies has become a global trend in recent years due to phenomenal increase in price of petroleum products, more awareness about impact of global warming cum-climate change andfast depletion of natural resources across the world.

Keeping this in mind, he said, the Power Division is currently preparing a draft Energy Conservation Act that requires inclusion of necessary provisions in the Building Code for ensuring efficient use and conservation of energy in buildingcomplexes.

The Chief Adviser said these provisions would include shading of building from sunlight, use of energy-efficient air conditioner/cooler, usage of efficient insulation materials, use of energy-efficient lights and installation of energy efficientappliances.

Listing different programmes undertaken by the government for off-grid electrification through solar home system, he said that PDB and REB along with NGOs and others organizations have been working for the promotion of Solar Home Systems in remoteareas of Bangladesh.

In this connection, he said at least 250 thousand Solar Home Systems have been installed so far across the country. "The government has a vision of providing one million Solar HomeSystems by the year 2012," he added.
