PM: Nov 14 election plan scrapped due to lack of concrete response from UDD
BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had asserted that he has scrapped his plan for a mid-November general election after receiving no concrete response from the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters, who balked at honoring their earlier agreement to end their protest.
The premier answered the question of the reporters with 'Yes" when he was asked whether the proposed election date on Nov 14 had already been canceled.
Mr Abhisit said he regarded the the decision of the UDD to not end the protest as the rejection of his five point road map for national reconciliation included the proposed House dissolution for fresh general elections on Nov 14.
He said henceforth, the timing of the future election will be at his discretion, and he would evaluate the situation before making decision over the matter.
The election should be held when he considered that the normalcy return to the country and situation was appropriate, he said.
Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu on Wednesday said the premier withdrew his plan to dissolve the House of Representatives at some point during Sept 15-30 for a general election to follow on Nov 14 because the UDD had vowed to continue protesting at Bangkok’s prime commercial area in Ratchaprasong until Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban surrenders to police to face charges for his role in the deadly April 10 crackdown.
Mr Abhisit said he had earlier said that his proposed road map was not a topic to be bargained or negotiated and that the UDD's demand about Mr Suthep was not at issue.
He said the government and all government agencies were under the law and are ready to be under Thai legal procedures, but the Red Shirt demand for the police to investigate and issue arrest warrants was considered interfering the process.
The premier said he had told the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) to bring back normalcy to the country as soon as possible and CRES is proceeding on the measures.
He added that the plan to cut off electricity, water supply and all kinds of public transport services at and around the Red Shirt rally site at Ratchaprasong would still be implemented. (TNA)
