Two hurt in plane crash at WA airport
A flying instructor may lose an eye and her student pilot has been injured in a
light plane crash at Jandakot Airport in Perth's south.
The 22-year-old female instructor also suffered multiple leg fractures and facial
injuries.
Inspector Neil Royle, of West Australian Police, said the plane had not left the
ground when it crashed about 1.30pm (WST) on Wednesday while preparing to take off
to practise stall manoeuvres.
"It didn't get to take off ... it's very similar to a high-speed vehicle crash to
me," he said.
He said the nose of the plane appears to have hit the ground near the end of the
runway.
The 34-year-old male student pilot, from New Zealand, was at the controls at the
time of the crash.
The pair was taken to Royal Perth Hospital by helicopter with non-life threatening
injuries but police said the instructor may lose an eye.
Inspector Royle said it was fortunate that a rescue helicopter crew on a training
flight nearby saw the crash and landed to help.
The two injured people were stabilised by Royal Flying Doctor Service doctors.
The single-engined Eagle 150 plane was operated by the Jandakot Flight Centre.
