WE WANT YOU TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MONGOLIA
MAIDAR ERGEKH
This great ceremony is held at various Mongolian monasteries, either in the first fifteen days of Tsagaan Sar (White Month-Lunar New Year), on the last summer full moon or on the last autumn full moon. The ceremony represents the coming of the Fifth Buddha (the Buddha of the Future), Maitreya (Maidar), and to pray for rebirth in heaven.
The statue of Maitreya is carried triumphantly out of the monastery and set upon a four-wheeled cart drawn by a green wooden horse or a white elephant, symbols of the spread of Buddhism and the victory of the faith with the coming of the Fifth Buddha.
