Conroy joins UN broadband commission
(AAP) - Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy has been appointed to a new United Nations commission on broadband.
Senator Conroy was announced as a founding member of the Broadband Commission for
Digital Development.
The appointment was announced in Geneva by the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU), the UN specialised agency for communications.
Senator Conroy said the commission would define strategies for accelerating
broadband rollout worldwide.
The commission has the support of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who will receive
its findings at a summit in New York in September.
"The appointment recognises the Australian Government's commitment to provide all
Australians with affordable high speed broadband, no matter where they live,"
Senator Conroy said.
"The digital economy presents social and economic opportunities that have never
before been possible and making the most of these opportunities will be crucial for
nations around the world."
