WE WANT YOU TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MONGOLIA
(continuation)
The tsam masks symbolized the terrible (dogshin) and peaceful (amirlangui) Buddhist deities. The mask of a minor deity, the terrible Jamsran, the raging 'red guard' (Ulaan sakhius), was considered to be the executor of punishment from the higher deities, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The third eye in his forehead denotes the deity's lethal ability.
The terrible deity Damdinchoijoo is considered to be a kind of judge, who investigates virtues and sins of the dead and decides on the type of punishment for sinners. Damdinchoijoo also had the power to restrain a person's anger and wicked thoughts.
The mask of the sixty-two images of the deity Zagdsambar is an image of the religious precaution. "Do no sin, from the earliest years of your life through your old age, but always do the right thing."
Many tsam masks have been preserved, some of them marvelously unique, made entirely from coral. They are kept in a number of museums as beautiful specimens of the art of Mongolia.
