Bangkok set to revive Ratchaprasong after protest ends

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has prepared five measures to rehabilitate the Ratchaprasong and Silom areas after the end of the anti-government Red Shirt protest.

The five measures include cleaning, making merit to boost morale of business operators, repairing safety equipment, and tax relaxation.

BMA Deputy Governor Taya Teepsuwan on Monday chaired a meeting on reviving Bangkok tourism after the protest, saying that City Hall plans its "Big 5 Moves” to restore the Ratchaprasong and Silom business areas.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and entrepreneurs in the Ratchaprasong area affected by the Red Shirt protest.

The revitalisation plan can kick off immediately if the Red Shirts announce to end their protest, the deputy governor said.

City Hall workers will clean pavements, roads and sewers, and beautify traffic islands. Religious ceremonies will be held to boost the morale of businesspersons and operators in the area. One thousand monks will be invited to receive alms from the Saladaeng to Ratchaprasong intersections, she added.

Free bus service will be offered for the public for one month to pay respect the shrines of the holy Brahmin gods in Ratchaprasong areas. Hotels and shopping malls in the areas will be asked to give special promotional offer to their customers to attract tourists. Food festivals, performances and entertainment activities will be organised.

Surveillance cameras will be fixed and more will be installed while tourist information centres will be set up on elevated train stations.

The last BMA measure is property tax reduction to help alleviate burdens of entrepreneurs affected by the protest.

Related agencies were assigned to conclude the budget for implementation of the plan and to submit it to the BMA on Wednesday to accelerate budget disbursement.

The BMA will also convene a meeting with parents of students in five schools in the protest area to move students to study in other schools on the beginning of their new semesters this week.

However, the situation will be assessed on the daily basis for the safety of students. (TNA)
