PRESIDENT: FAIR FOOD DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED

Sappore, July 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono saw that countries in the world needed to build a fairer food distribution system and side with the poor countries to overcome the current food crisis.

Speaking to Indonesian journalists at the Sapporo Korakuen Hotel, Sapporo, on Thursday, the president explained about his activities during his stay in Japan to attend the G-8 Summit.

"There is need to build a global logistic stock to cope with starvation in food crisis-stricken countries," he said.

The head of state also expressed his concern about the food crisis in his address to the G-8 Summit which successfully drew positive responses from the participants. Hence, there was a joint understanding of the need to build the biggest logistic stock to help food crisis-stricken nations.

The president admitted that there was an idea to form a food logistic stock in ASEAN member countries. But the president understood that each country could not be forced to build such logistic stock on account of the existing market mechanism which could also affect food supply and demand.

Furthermore, Yudhoyono underlined the importance of building a food information system among the countries in the world including ASEAN in order to prevent a recurrence of the food crisis.

"A food information system will prevent speculators from using the world food crisis as their business trick, although the food crisis is inseparable from the problem of supply and demand in each country. A country which is running short of food could be assisted by those who have a surplus in food supply," he said.

The president said the availability of information on food would enable to predict future supply and demand.
