RI'S 1ST-SEMESTER CAR SALES UP 48 PCT
Jakarta, July 10 (ANTARA) - Domestic car sales in the first half of 2008 rose 48.2 percent to 292,589 units from 197,316 units in the same period last year, an automotive industry spokesman said.
"Judging by the figure, we are optimistic that car sales until the end of this year will grow significantly compared to last year," the marketing director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), Joko Trisanyoto, said on Thursday.
Normally, first-semester car sales represented 45 percent of the country's full-year car sales, he said.
With the total car sales standing at 292,589 units in the first semsester of 2008, the total national car sales until the end of this year would reach at least 560,000 units, he predicted.
"The estimate has already taken into account a possible drop in car sales on holidays due to a reduction in the number of working days. The minimum estimate of car sales in the second semester will reach 275,000 units," he said.
He said car sales was still likely to grow in the July-September period but it was difficult to predict car sales in the October-December period because of post-fasting month Lebaran, Christmas and year-end festivities as well as election campaigns.
"But our dealers are still optimistic they can increase their sales until the end of this year. They doubt whether or not their sales still will grow next year," he said.
While car sales in major countries including the United States, China and India fell in the first half of 2008, car sales in Indonesia grew 48.2 percent over the period, he said.
In June 2008 alone, domestic car sales reached 54,631 units, up 7.7 percent from a month earlier, he said.
Compared to the same period last year, domestic car sales in June 2008 rose 38.6 percent, he said.
