Mehman-Parast: Iran not after buying time

Tehran, May 9, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said on Saturday that Iran is not after buying time as it believes that this policy would backfire.
Mehman-Parast made the remarks in response to recent allegations made by US officials that Iran was trying to buy time by involving Brazil in its nuclear swap deal.
Speaking to IRNA, he said “We are very serious in providing enriched uranium for Tehran’s research reactor.”
Time is of prime importance for Iran and for the same reason the country has started producing 20 percent enriched uranium in order to provide medicines for its patients, he said.
Iran is to start nuclear swap deal as soon as its points of views are taken into consideration by the other sides, he said.
Providing Tehran’s nuclear research reactor with required enriched uranium is of prime importance for Iranian officials, he said.
Based on our rights endorsed by IAEA, Iran declared its demands several months ago and the body reflected Iran’s request to the US, France and Russia accordingly, Mehman-Parast said.
Following the demand made by Iran, the three countries held a meeting in Vienna on nuclear swap deal instead of its sale, he said.
As one of the IAEA member states, Iran should be authorized to purchase its required nuclear fuel but the country took steps towards a nuclear swap deal through a memorandum of understanding and building confidence between the two sides, he said.
It was agreed that the details of such a swap seal be specified through bilateral negotiations but the propaganda campaign launched by the other sides cast doubts over their sincerity, he said.
To put an end to all doubts as well as political and propaganda campaign, Iran called for a tangible guarantee for its nuclear swap deal, Mehman-Parast said.
Since Iran had a very limited time for providing Tehran nuclear research center with required enriched uranium, the country managed to produce 20 percent enriched uranium, he said.
Simultaneous with producing 20 percent enriched uranium inside the country, Iran voiced readiness for nuclear swap deal, he pointed out.
During the period, countries such as Turkey and Brazil along with other friendly countries offered various formulas on nuclear fuel swap deal between the two sides, he said.
It seems that the latest formula offered during talks between Iran, Turkey and Brazil is very practical, he said./end
