Program will broaden scrutiny of facilities in India, China
Melbourne, July 10 (PTI) Australia will join the United States and Europe to inspect factories in countries like India and China that are producing pharmaceutical raw materialswithout enough safety standards.
According to an A.B.C. report, factories in countries like India and China are producing much of the world's pharmaceutical raw materials, but are not always subject tosafety inspections.
The U.S. Government Wednesday announced it will work with Australian and European officials to coordinate their inspections and share information, thereby covering a widerterritory and more foreign facilities.
The pilot program will initially focus on makers ofactive pharmaceutical ingredients.
U.S. Health Secretary Mike Leavitt said facilities willbe inspected more often.
"What we are seeing is the maturing of a global market, and we have to invent new tools to deal with a changingenvironment," Leavitt said.
Two people died in the U.S. and hundreds of others had severe allergic reactions after the blood thinner Heparin wascontaminated in a Chinese factory.
