In an exclusive interview with IRNA at the United Nations, New York headquarters, Bashar Ja’fari added that “it is now 50 years that the demand for declaring the Middle East as a nuclear weapons free zone has been being repeated and the reason why this dream has not come true yet is the world powers’ double standards in favor of Tel Aviv.

He added, “We are witnesses to the observation of a broad double standard in favor of Israel by the owners of the nuclear weapons.”

Syria’s permanent envoy to the UN emphasized, “The ongoing NPT Review Conference at the UN has therefore no chance for declaring the Middle East a as a nuclear weapons free zone.”

Regarding the Tehran Nuclear Conference’s motto, ‘Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapons for None’, Ja’fari said, “That was a good and important motto, proving to everyone that what Iran is after is the Article 4 of the NPT that is quite legal and legitimate.”

Regarding the Thursday meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) with the Iranian foreign minister he said, “During that private meeting, Mottaki elaborated the details of Iran’s proposals to the NPT Review Conference for us.”

The Syrian diplomat said, “I believe it was quite beneficial that the NAM member states spoke openly there about their evaluations of the objectives that their group expects that this conference would pay attention to./end
