Regional meet talks on drug controls

HCM City (VNA) - Delegates from 10 ASEAN countries and China met in Ho Chi Minh City on July 9 to review joint measures to control production, distribution, and use of drugs.

Opening the seventh annually ASEAN-China Cooperation Operations In Response to Dangerous Drugs (ACCORD) Task I& II Meeting, Major General Lam Minh Chien, deputy general director of the Police Department, said drugs lead to many dangerous crimes, including organised and transnational ones, and the squandering of large amounts of money by families and society.

As one of the causes of the spread of HIV/AIDS, drugs are also closely linked to hunger and poverty, he added.

The half-day meeting reviewed public communication as part of efforts to reduce drug demand and the advantages and difficulties in the drug fight, and devised plans for the coming years.

Chien said the Vietnamese Government would continue to attach great importance to the prevention and control of drug use and has adopted various approaches in this effort together with the international community.

"The Government focuses on strengthening cooperation with other nations and international organisations, particularly neighbouring states."The legal system governing drug control has gradually improved and steering committees on drug prevention have been established from central to grassroots levels, he said.

Campaigns against drug use have been intensified as have raids in border areas to eradicate poppy crops, he said.
