BUSINESSMAN MISSING IN BANGGAI FLOOD

Luwuk, Central Sulawesi, July 10 (ANTARA) - A businessman is reported to have gone missing in a flood that hit Tobelombang village, Nuhon sub district, Banggai District, Central Sulawesi, on Wednesday.

The businessman was identified as Helmy Saputra, an executive at CV Mitra Banggai Sirtu mining company, Yanto, a member of the search and rescue team, said here on Thursday.

The victim had been swept away by floodwater reaching a height of up to two meters which hit the mining site's camp following the overflowing of Tobelombang River, Yanto said.

Rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather as heavy rains continued to fall in the district, he said.

The flooding has cut off land transportation between Luwuk and Palu and beteen Luwuk and Makassar as a concrete bridge over Tobelombang River was destroyed by the flood.

Tens of heads of cattle also went missing in the disaster.

Floodwaters inundated roads and damaged a bridge connecting Luwuk and Toili districts, according to several truck drivers heading for Toili who had been forced to turn back to Luwuk due to the disaster on Wednesday.

The floods reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters, also affected hectares of farm land and thousands of houses in Batui, Toili and West Toili districts, forcing local residents to flee their villages.

Among the worst-hit villages were Sinorang, Bone, Balantak, and Masing, he said.
