But no matter the size, the masks always conformed to the religious canons: the delicate work and magnificent decorations were supposed to arouse reverential awe.
They were made of papier-mache, richly inlaid with coral, gold, silver and semi-precious stones, and painted with gouache and mineral dyes. Masked performers enacted ancient ritual dances and scenes from the lives of the gods and heroes. By their movements and gestures the actors conveyed the idea of the eternal triumph of good over evil and life over death.
