DPR WORRIED ABOUT POSSIBLE POPULATION EXPLOSION

Jakarta, July 10 (ANTARA) - Failures in the implementation of family planning programs in the country over the past few years have given rise to worries in the House of Representatives (DPR) about the possibility of a population explosion occurring in years to come, the House's leader said.

Speaking at a seminar on baby booms at the legislative building here on Thursday, House Speaker Agung Laksono said the second phase of a population explosion could be inevitable in the future.

He said Indonesia was at present the world's fourth most populous country after China, India, and the United States.

Therefore, Indonesia could sooner or later be the second or third most populous country in the world if the problems faced in the implementation of family planning program were not immediatelyovercome.

"The population problem should be overcome seriously and immediately. Otherwise, the phenomena of baby boom will be inevitable," the House speaker said.

He said the population problem was a big issue because it was closely related with the overall development program.
