Thailand celebrates 60th anniversary of HM the King's Coronation
BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) – Thai people across the kingdom celebrated the Coronation Day on May 5 as His Majesty the King presided over a religious ceremony at the Grand Palace marking the 60th anniversary of his coronation.
In the capital, people gathered at Siriraj Hospital and lined up along the street leading to the Grand Palace to catch a glimpse of the beloved King. They chanted "Long Live the King" and waved the national and royal flags.
HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and other royal family members were present at the Amarindra Vinichaya Throne Hall for the religious ceremony on Coronation Day.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the House Speaker, Privy Councillors, top military officers and other senior government officials attended the ceremony.
The king has been hospitalised since September 19 last year when he was admitted with fatigue and loss of appetite. The Royal Household Bureau said he has recovered from a lung inflammation, but he remained hospitalised since then.
In the provinces, governors leading government officials and people held ceremonies to honour the King in front of his image at city halls.
Meanwhile, the anti-government Red Shirts led by Veera Musikapong offered alms for 300 monks and made merits for His Majesty the King at the protest site of Ratchaprasong intersection on this auspicious occasion.
Red shirted leaders including Weng Tojirakarn, Manit Jitjanklub, Pol Lt-Gen Chat Kuldilok and Arisman Pongruangrong also joined the Buddhist rite.
Mr Veera said onstage the event is to pay homage and to make merit in honour of the monarch. Also the anti-government protesters are loyal to the monarchy without any intention to overthrow the monarchy as being alleged, Mr Veera said. (TNA)
