Poll: 60% of respondents favour PM’s national reconciliation plan
BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) - A total of 60.5 per cent of all respondents in a new ABAC Poll agree with a five-point national reconciliation plan proposed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, designed to end Thailand's political turbulence, ABAC Poll director Noppadol Kannikar said Wednesday.
Conducted Tuesday with queries to 1,123 people nationwide, the poll also found that 54.3 per cent of the respondents believed that the monarchy should not be dragged into political conflicts, one of the five points stipulated in the plan.
However, 14.2 per cent thought otherwise and the remainding one-third-- 31.5 per cent-- offered no comment.
Some 55.6 per cent said that the general election set by Mr. Abhisit for November 14 is an appropriate time while 16 per cent said it is too late and 28.3 per cent said it is too soon.
According to the poll, people’s happiness stood at 6.7 out of a total of 10 points after learning that anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), now rallying on Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong Road and adjacent Ratchadamri Road, have welcomed the national reconciliation plan.
Although UDD key leaders have appeared to accept the prime minister’s reconciliation plan, they have demanded the government to set a clear date for the dissolution of the House of Representatives. They also said fixing the election date comes under the authority of the Election Commission. They also asked the government to cease making threats against the protesters. (TNA)
