LWU opens new Art of Silk showroom

(KPL) A show room "Art of Silk" was opened officially at the Lao Women's Union on 9 July to mark the 53rd anniversary of the establishment of the Lao Women's Union (LWU).

The LWU President, Mrs. Sisay Luededmounsone, member of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, and LWU executive members, said that, "the exhibition room of the Art of Silk, after some time of renovation, is now re-opened with an aim of preserving, and promoting thetraditional culture of manual weaving, sericulture, and fine costume of ethnic Lao women to live with Lao women forever.

These hand-made products present the typical and artistic of different kind of magic skills fromgroup ethnics since the past to recent years,".

The event was jointly attended by the spouses of foreign ambassadors to Laos, representatives of line ministries, government and internationalorganisations in Laos.

This exhibition room was established since July 20, 1992.

This (preservation and promotion) is one way to educate the young generation and also can disseminate to foreigners to learn about the typical andspecial skills of Lao women.

In cooperation with government organisations, international organisations and NGOs, the LWU can reach the goals to disseminate and promote the preservation of old clothes such as priceless fabrics for the young generation. At the same time, we try to encourage the weaving and find the market in order that they can get benefits from their products, highlighted the LWU President. Although, these products in this room cannot represent all the good tradition in the whole country, they are not the oldest materials if we compare with the long period, more than one thousand years, since Lao women knew weaving with silk. There are many kinds of cotton products having 50 to 150 years old in different styles. The handicraftproducts were attractive to domestic and foreign visitors.

With these reasons, the LWU make efforts to collect and gather products and good achievement from the different parts of the country to show to guests and visitors. Its efforts have won cooperation and support from differentparties.

The exhibition room will be further developed to a sustainable museum if we have support from the government and private sectors as well as international organizations, especially customers. The participation is through making comments, providing your antique materials and financial support for maintenance and data collection. The involvement will increase, which will not only benefit women but improve their family life as well. It will contribute to the implementation of the government's strategic socio-economic plan to reduce poverty in order to get the country off the list of least developed countries by 2020. This is also to implement the sixth five-year national plan for socio-economic development (2006-2010), NDG and NGPES. In addition, it can encourage women's activities at differentlevels, including the policy to promote gender equality widely in society.

Mrs Sisay has expressed thanks to the SIDA, UNICEF, and the Japan International Volunteer Centre for their financial supports and lessons, and contribution to the creation of the exhibition room Art of Silk of the LaoWomen's Union.
