BENGKULU JOLTED BY 5.6 EARTHQUAKE

Bengkulu, July 10 (ANTARA)- A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu Province, Sumatra, on Thursday morning, at 5.17 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The quake's epicenter was located at 2.13 degrees southern latitude and 100.62 degrees eastern longitude, around 74 km northwest of Muko Muko District, Bengkulu Province, at a depth of 19 km below sea level, according to information of the meteorological and geophysics office on Thursday.

The moderate earthquake was also felt by residents of West Sumatra at 5.25 am on Thursday. West Sumatra's Meteorological and Geophysics (BMG) official Nasrul told ANTARA in Padang on Thursday that residents in a number of districts, such as Padang, Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang and southern coastal areas felt strong tremors.

Many residents rushed out of their homes in panic. "I was surprised as the quake occurred and rushed out of my house," Fitrikawti, an official of the Imam Bonjol State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN), Padang, said.

Two moderate earthquakes also rocked North Maluku and North Sulawesi waters as well as East Java on Wednesday evening.

Indonesia lies in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
