MEETING ORGANIZED FOR WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Glob International NGO organized a meeting themed “2010-Freedom of Information” in Puma Imperial Hotel, Ulaanbaatar. At the meeting, Kh.Naranjargal, a Head of the Glob International, made information on “Press Freedom in Mongolia in 2009”.
Mongolian journalists are working in an environment where restrictions on information with unable to get information from state authorities and officials and to see documents and papers of state organizations. This situation leads to breaking of the democratic principles that state organizations should be open to the public. In addition, it also disregarded the people's right to get fair information.
According to a survey by the Freedom House international organization, Mongolia is considered a country with half-press freedom. A total of 215 journalists were surveyed In a Globe International 2009 study on violation of journalists' professional rights, of them 60.4 percent, or 130 journalists, faced the complaints of defamation for their articles and programs. Almost 51 percent, or 66 of 130 journalists, were threatened, 40 percent were under pressure, while 23 percent or 30 journalists were brought to the court in civil cases. Some problems such as authorities' threatening, oppression, and forcing to disclose sources and refusing to provide information, are main difficulties facing the Mongolia journalists to fulfill their duty.
In the course of the meeting, Globe International honored a Press Freedom award “For Fair” to journalist Kh.Namuun-Uyanga of Ogloonii Sonin (Morning News) newspaper and B.Myagmarsuren, editor-in-chief of the Zavkhan newspaper in Zavkhan province for their outstanding professional performance to deliver public the truth.
The first press freedom award was given by the Globe International to eight journalists who injured during the riots of July 1, 2008. This award will be annually granted to outstanding journalists on World Press Freedom Day.
