WE WANT YOU TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MONGOLIA
THE EPIC
The epic is the most extensive Mongolian popular oral literature, which can be found in all Mongolian ethnic groups, but especially in the Dorvod, Bayad, Uriankhai and Torguud. It is usually intoned in autumn and winter, when a person places a two-stringed lute wrapped in a khadag (blue silk scarf) on a chest in the home before inviting the epic singer to perform.
People believe that a lute has a magic power, so after all work has been completed and the livestock penned, the family gathers in the ger to listen to the epic poem.
The storyteller, wearing a sheepskin deel with a red or black hem, sits on the three-layered quilted felt mattress and begins to intone the epic.
