Princess Sirindhorn makes personal visit to Chulalongkorn Hospital

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - Thailand's revered Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Monday morning made a personal visit to Chulalongkorn Hospital to express her moral support to hospital staff and outpatients who visited the hospital for treatment.

According to hospital director Dr Adisorn Patradul, Princess Sirindhorn met with executives of the hospital and its neighbour, the Thai Red Cross Society, of which the princess is currently executive vice-president.

"She asked all staff to take good care of themselves and stay safe as well as to take good care of all patients. We all were pleased by her concern, " said Dr Adisorn.

The protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) last Thursday stormed Chulalongkorn Hospital to search for armed soldiers which they believed were hiding inside the hospital, leading to an evacuation of patients to other hospitals.

Princess Sirindhorn on Saturday visited the empty hospital and instructed the transfer of sole remaining patient, the Supreme Patriarch, the Sangjaraja, to Siriraj Hospital.

As Red Shirt protesters on Sunday opened a section of Ratchadamri Road to facilitate intending patients to enter Chulalongkorn Hospital, Dr Adisorn thanked the protest leaders for partly restoring the hospital's image, and the hospital has now partially opened for services and operations.

Dr Adisorn, however, insisted that full hospital services will still be suspended until the anti-government demonstrators open both sections of the road leading to the hospital entrance from Sala Daeng intersection to Sarasin intersection, about one kilometre away.

The hospital director affirmed that Chulalongkorn Hospital inpatients relocated to other hospitals were still in normal conditions and none had died. Only one, now at Kasemrad Hospital, is in serious condition.

According to Public Health Ministry, 183 patients were removed from Chulalongkorn Hospital.

Of total patients, 65 are being treated at 21 hospitals under the Ministry, 49 of them at seven hospitals under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), 39 patients at four hospitals under university faculties, three in a Defence Ministry hospital, two at Chulabhorn Hospital under the Chulabhorn Research Institute, and 25 patients at 12 different private hospitals.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said the ministry had informed Chulalongkorn Hospital it would help the hospital take care for its patients according to their doctor's instructions. However, it also depends on how the hospital wants to be supported. (TNA)
