Iran to produce 18 new bio-implant products

Tehran, May 3, IRNA – Some 18 new bio-implant products are to be manufactured in the country for medical uses, it was announced here on Sunday.
Ramezan-Ali Sadeqzadeh, deputy head of Industrial Development and Renovation Organization (IDRO) told IRNA that through access of Iranian experts to bone and cardiovascular implants, manufacture of 18 new bio-implant products in the country is on the agenda so that the number of produced bio-implant products reaches 20.
He added that 40 pieces of cardiovascular bio-implants were successfully tested during cardio surgeries in various Iranian hospitals last year.
Sadeqzadeh further announced that the Islamic Republic has the capacity to produce 2,140 cardiovascular bio-implants a year.
He expressed his satisfaction with the high quality of orthopedic bio-implant products in the country.
A bio-implant may be defined as biomaterial surgically implanted in a person’s body to replace damaged tissue. Common areas of application include orthopedic reconstructive prosthesis, cardiac prostheses, skin and cornea.
The process of implantation of medical devices is subject to the same complications as any other invasive medical procedure, including infection, inflammation and pain. Implants also run the risk of rejection if they elicit a reaction from the host immune system.
In related developments, Minister of Industries and Mines Ali-Akbar Mehrabian recently announced that Iran has launched the production line of cardiovascular implants that will save thousands of lives.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the 2nd phase of the tissue-cloning company based on Kish Island on Friday, he described the product as “strategic”.
Mehrabian added that while the domestically-manufactured implant will address domestic needs, it will also be exported./end
