Dockers run over struggling Eagles
Fremantle continued their remarkable start to the AFL season and hurt West Coast's
finals aspirations with a bruising 38-point victory at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
The Eagles shot out to a 23-point lead eight minutes into the second quarter but
failed to kick another goal until 21 minutes into the last quarter as Fremantle
powered to the 17.9 (111) to 10.13 (73) win, their sixth derby triumph on the trot.
The Dockers' fifth win of the season sees them join Sydney, St Kilda and Collingwood
on top of the ladder, while the Eagles are now 1-5 ahead of Saturday's clash with
Hawthorn.
West Coast will be left counting the cost of the fiery encounter, with midfielder
Chris Masten suffering a knee injury and Andrew Embley reported for his dangerous
bump on Rhys Palmer, which left the Dockers on-baller groggy and with a sore neck.
Stephen Hill, Hayden Ballantyne, Alex Silvagni and Chris Mayne all limped off with
leg injuries during the first half but returned to the field.
Michael Barlow tallied 25, seven tackles and one goal to win the Ross Glendinning
medal as best afield.
Matthew Pavlich was kept relatively quiet but still kicked five goals, while Paul
Duffield's run from defence proved crucial in the win.
Quinten Lynch was kept goalless by Luke McPharlin while Josh Kennedy (three goals)
only popped up late after a dirty day and Mark LeCras (two goals) was well held by
Chris Tarrant.
The push and shove that started before the bounce threatened to boil over in the
sixth minute when Embley charged through a pack and took out a bent-over Palmer just
six minutes in.
Palmer, playing his first AFL match in more than a year, was left dazed by the
contact and received treatment on his neck throughout the contest.
The Dockers took a one-point lead into quarter time courtesy of two goals to Pavlich
but the Eagles looked set to cause an upset when their four-goal burst early in the
second quarter put Fremantle on the back foot.
But the Eagles' shoddy kicking on goal from that point on - going from 8.1 to 8.11
before Kennedy kicked two goals in a minute late in the match - cost West Coast any
chance of victory.
Fremantle kicked seven goals to two in the final quarter to cruise to the
comprehensive victory.
