PROSECUTOR GENERAL OF AZERBAIJAN PARTAKES IN 8TH CONFERENCE OF EUROPEAN PROSECUTORS

Baku, 10 July,(AzerTAj)- Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Zakir Garalov and his accompanying delegation participated in the conference of European prosecutors entitled role of prosecutor`s office in protecting human rights and public interests out of criminal law held from 1 to 4 June in Saint Petersburg.

The conference was attended by over 150 representatives from 40 Council of Europe member countries and executives from international organizations including Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis, CoE commissioner for human rights ThomasHammerberg and others.

The aim of the conference is to define common minimum principles for protecting human rights and freedoms and public interests out of criminal prosecution in theEurope.

Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov briefly analyzed the role of prosectur`s office in the rights protection mechanism of the state in Azerbaijan. He noted office`s status was formed due to the judicial reforms carried out in Azerbaijan under thesupervision of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

He stressed the successful activity of the prosecutor`s office is based on the President Ilham Aliyev`s policy aimed atboosting the country`s economy, improving people`s welfare, strengthening democracy.

Prosecutor General drew the attention of conference participants to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying 20 percent of internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan had been occupied by Armenia. According to him, the conflict resultedin destroying all infrastructure and killing thousands of people.

On the sidelines of the event, Garalov held some meetings with Terry Davis, Thomas Hammerberg, Judge of the European Court for Human Rights Egbert Myjer, ProsecutorGenerals of Russia, Moldova, Czechia, Lithuania and other officials.

Azerbaijani representatives gave out to participants a brochure “Human rights protection in Azerbaijan Republic” reflecting the present human rights situation, books “Truth on Nagorno-Karabakh”, CDs “Khojaly Genocide” published at theinitiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
