HOUSE INQUIRY COMMITTEE ELECTS CHAIRMAN, VICE CHAIRMEN

Jakarta, July 10 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR)'s Fuel Oil Price Hike Inquiry Committee at its first plenary session here Wednesday elected Zulkifli Hasan, leader of the National Mandate Party (PAN) faction, as its chairman.

The session, led by House Speaker Agung Laksono, decided to appoint the committee's chair by a vote after it failed to agree to a proposal to do it based on the proportional system (whereby the post would be filled by a member of the biggest party faction) and to an alternate proposal to name the chair by consensus.

In the vote, Zulkifli Hasan was supported by 28 members and his closest rival, Bambang Wuryanto of the Indonesian Demcracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) faction, by 17 members.

Hasan also defeated Azhar Romli of the Golkar Party faction, Sutan Bathoegana of the Democrat Party faction, and Efiardi Asda of the United Development Party (PPP) faction.

The defeated candidates were eventually appointed to be the committee's vice chairmen.

In closing the meeting marked by tough debates, House Speaker Agung Laksono said , with the appointment of its officers, the Fuel Oil Price Hike Inquiry Committee was expected to start working immediately and in ways expected by the public.

All of the party factions in the House are represented in the committee in proportion to the size of their respective memberships. The Golkar Party faction has 12 people in the committee, the PDIP faction 10, the Democrat Party , PPP, PAN and PKB factions five each, the PKS faction 4 , the Democracy Pioneer Star Party (BPD)faction 2, and the Reform Star Party (PBR) and Prosperous Peace Party (PDS) faction one each.

In the performance of its mission, the committee has the right to summon anybody involved in the production and distribution of fuel oils to satisfy the House's need to know the reasons for the government's decision to raise the domestic fuel oil prices by more than 28 percent last May.
