Eurasia Media Forum panel successful with regard to Iran

Almaty, April 28, IRNA – Representative to the 9th Eurasian Media Forum Ramin Mehman-Parast described the panel, which particularly focused on Iran, as very successful for the country.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA here on Tuesday, he said the lively panel discussions provided a chance for participants to get a clear and first-hand view of the situation in Iran.

Mehman-Parast who is a senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister and also serves as the spokesman for the ministry, further said the fact that Iran was the most important issue the media forum was focusing upon indicates the significance of Iran's position in the region and for world media.

Commenting on the importance of the meeting for regional as well as Eurasian media, he said the meeting provided a chance for Iran to advance its policy of public diplomacy - which is particularly stressed by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, - by outlining its views and official policies in issues being discussed by the participants.

He said especially at the present time when the country was facing even more aggressive propaganda warfare by the West specially on such issues as Iran's nuclear program or the post-election developments, it was important for officials to offer a transparent and clear view of developments to foreign media and scholars.

Mehman-Parast said the most basic and important issue the meeting was focusing on this year was Iran because, as the organizers, too, have already stressed, most important developments in the region have always been related to Iran.

The panel which was scheduled to explore the issue of Iran was called the "political culture of Iran or the "unknown" Iran" because they wanted to give media and countries the chance to get familiar with the prevailing political culture in Iran, he added.

He said the panel discussion was quite successful especially in that participants offered their views on Iran-related issues and its policies and listened to Iranian delegation's views on most significant developments in the country.

He said majority of participants in the panel agreed with Iran on its positions on different issues including its nuclear policies after listening to diverse views offered to them.

Given the positive attitude existing in regional nations towards Iran and its policies, he said the Iranian delegation was quite successful in offering its anti-American views and disclosing the hegemonic policies of certain western countries particularly the US.

The 9th Eurasia Media Forum was inaugurated by Kazakhstan's President Nursultun Nazarbayev Tuesday morning. It is organized by the president's daughter Darigha who is a media person herself.

About 400 delegations from 37 countries are participating in the meeting which is the most significant media event in the region.

During his opening ceremony remarks, President Nazarbayev called for international cooperation on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, setting the scene for a lively panel discussion with senior delegates from Iran.

He said Kazakhstan was a strong advocate at the recent Global Summit in Washington of measures to achieve better international control over programmes for developing nuclear power.

"The uncontrolled spread of nuclear weapons was making them more accessible to international terrorists. There is a great risk of the use of ‘dirty bombs’”, he warned.

Without mentioning any specific countries, he said: “We believe that all countries have an equal right to carry out atomic power research. At the same time, no one should cross the line separating a peaceful nuclear programme from a military programme.”

Repeating his call for the establishment of nuclear-free zones in the Middle East and elsewhere, the president stressed the need to reassure the non-nuclear countries that might agree to take part./end
