MAGNITUDE-5.1 QUAKE HITS ACEH'S WEST COAST

Banda Aceh, July 8 (ANTARA) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the west coast of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) on Monday (July 7) but caused no panic among local people.

The earthquake occurred in Indonesia's westernmost province at 11.18 p.m. at the coordinates of 2.91 degrees northern latitude - 95.76 degrees eastern longitude, 82 kilometers northwest of Sinabang, Simeulue district, head of the Ma Ie Geophysics Agency in Banda Aceh (NAD province's capital), Syahnan, said here Tuesday.

The epicenter of the quake lay at a depth of 30 kilometers under the sea. The tremor which did not trigger tsunami was also felt by people in the coastal areas of Aceh Barat and Aceh Barat Daya districts.

Following the gigantic earthquake followed by tsunami on December 26, 2004, more but smaller quakes have occurred in Aceh's west coastal areas with the epicenters all in the sea near the cluster of Simeulue Island.

Aceh is actually being hit by about six to ten tectonic earthquakes measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale every day but most of them are not felt by people.

"Although the earthquakes do not trigger tsunami, local people especially those living in multi-storey buildings are expected to remain on the alert and not to panic when they feel earthquakes," Shaynan said.
