Mottaki: Failed sanctions should not be repeated
Vienna, April 26, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Sunday that the failed polices of economic sanctions on Iran should not be repeated.
Mottaki made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger.
The Islamic Republic of Iran will never yield to bullying powers and is determined to vindicate its legitimate rights under any circumstances, he said, adding that Iran will make decisions based on national interests.
“We believe that Iran should attain its legal and legitimate rights within Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Safeguards Agreement of International Atomic Energy Agency and hope that the member states of UN Security Council will take a constructive and rational decision to this effect,” he said.
“I think it is possible to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program based on a well-defined and mutually agreed formula through political negotiations,” he said.
Iran is member of IAEA and the NPT signatory which has exercised profound cooperation with the UN nuclear agency, he said.

On the demand for 20 percent enriched fuel for Tehran medical research reactor, Mottaki said the fuel swap deal is on the table and if concerned parties show their political will, the proposal could soon be implemented.
On the recent nuclear threat posed to Iran, he said “We think Tehran international conference on 'Disarmament and Non-Proliferation' was an adequate response to such threats.”
The issue of nuclear disarmament should be taken seriously and no country should possess weapons of mass destruction, Mottaki pointed out.
On recent nuclear threat posed by US president to Iran, he said threat with nuclear weapons never guarantee peace and security in the world.
Regarding Iran’s regional role, he said that the country has adopted a constructive stand in dealing with its neighbors and has spared no efforts to help resolve their problems.
On Iraq, he said Iran has friendly ties with all Iraqi political wings as well as the Iraqi tribes, he said.
Spindelegger for his part said that Austria believes in diplomatic means to resolve the dispute on Iran's nuclear program.
He welcomed Mottaki's initiative to go ahead with diplomatic talks to resolve the dispute, adding that the initiative must be pursued to stop the sanctions drive./end
