Saudi FM calls for improvement of Tehran-Riyadh ties

Riyadh, April 25, IRNA – Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal in a meeting with Iran’s new Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mohammad Javad Rasouli Mahallati called for expansion of cooperation between Tehran and Riyadh.

In the meeting, which took place on Saturday, the Saudi minister called for developing bilateral relations in all fields as well as détente in current ties.

He said that continuation of existing strained relations is not beneficial to any of the two countries, adding that because of the strategic roles of the two countries, other nations of the region will be influenced by such poor relations.

Saud al-Faisal added that common efforts of both countries should be in direction of promoting bilateral ties, progress in Islamic world aims and establishment of security in the region.

He said insistence on continuation of current ties will weaken Islamic countries stances in the world and the region.

The minister called Iran a civilized country with rich culture and said that there are many commonalities between the two countries which should be used in direction of progress for interests and aims of the two countries as well as the Islamic world.

The new ambassador conveyed Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki's greetings to his Saudi counterpart and expounded on his plans and programs during his tenure and said that improvement of ties is Iran’s desire, too.

He underlined that Iran wants expansion of bilateral cooperation in all fields and removal of dark clouds which have cast shadows on political relations of the two countries.

Rasouli Mahallati also submitted a copy of his credentials to Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal./end
