QUAKE SHAKES MALUKU TENGGARA BARAT DISTRICT

Ambon, Maluku, July 7 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook the eastern Indonesian district of Maluku Tenggara Barat early Monday but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 02.44 a.m. was in the sea about 214 km northwest of the district capital Saumlaki at a depth of 124 km, the Maluku Tenggara Barat district administration said on Monday.

But it added that the tremblor could not be felt by people living in Saumlaki and environs.

Separately, on Monday, Head of the Ambon Geophysics Station Benny Sipolo said the quake neither caused material damage nor claimed lives.

The quake also did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, he said.

But he warned local residents of aftershocks that could occur anytime following Monday's 5.4 magnitude quake.

Maluku Tenggara Barat which borders Timor Leste is prone to quake in recent weeks.

On June 26 and 30, quakes also jolted the district.
