President Ahmadinejad in Malaysia for D8 Summit
Kuala Lumpur, July 7, IRNA - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in the Malaysian capital on Monday morning to attend the sixth Summit of the Eight Islamic Developing Countries (D-8).
The Iranian president was welcomed at the airport by Malaysian Foreign Minister Rais Yatim.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki who was in Malaysia to attend the 11th meeting of the D8 foreign ministers held two daysearlier and Iran's Ambassador to Kuala Lumpur Mehdi Khandaq-Abadi were also present at the welcoming ceremony at the airport.
President Ahmadinejad is expected to address the D-8 Summit tomorrow.
The president is expected to hold separate talks with a number of leaders of the D-8 member states on the sidelines of the summit aboutmajor bilateral and regional developments.
The D-8 comprises Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia,Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
It was set up in 1997 as an economic alliance with the objective of improving the position of Muslim developing countries in the global world economy through the diversification of their economies bycreating new opportunities and increased trade relations.
The theme of the upcoming summit is "Meeting Challenges Through Innovative Cooperation." Speaking to reporters before leaving Tehran for Kuala Lumpur, President Ahmadinejad said that the D-8 played a "significant role in closing the ranks of its member states." He added that the sixth summit of the leaders aimed to set up a 10-year work plan to promote all-out cooperation among its memberstates.
