NGO RALLIES FOR RI DEBT WRITE-OFF OUTSIDE JAPANESE EMBASSY

Jakarta, July 7 (ANTARA) - Activists of the Anti-Debt Coalition (KAU), a non-governmental organization (NGO), staged a rally in front of the Japanese embassy in Jakarta on Monday to demand that advanced countries grouped in G8 write off Indonesia's debts.

The demonstrators carried the flags of the G8 member states including Japan's.

The rally did not cause a traffic jam because it was participated in by only around 20 people and lasted about a half hour.

Last Thursday (July 3), the head of the KAU's national secretariat, Dani Setiawan, issued a press statement saying that the G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan, from July 7 to 9, 2008, should be used by Indonesia as a momentum to demand the writing off of its debts.

The debt write-off was justifiable on account of the socio-economic damage Indonesia had suffered due to the country's foreign loans transactions so far, he said.

The damage was caused by the practices of economic liberalization, privatization, and non-subsidy policies pushed by lending countries, he said.

The G8 member states were main bilateral lending countries of Indonesia, constituting around 90 percent of Indonesia's debts, with Japan as the largest creditor with loans of around Rp186.38 trillion, it said.
