CORAL REEFS IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK BEING ACTIVELY PRESERVED
Jakarta, July 7 (ANTARA) - The Komodo National Park Office is continuously making efforts to preserve coral reefs in the Park by among other things conducting resource trainings, researches, facilities' infrastructure maintenances, and regular nature potential data collection.
This year, the Komodo National Park Office conducted a diving course in cooperation with PT Putri Naga Komodo, while the 1999 diving course was implemented with the assistance of The Nature Conservation.
In 2006, the office organized a coral reef monitoring training course.
A number of researches on the status of the park's coral reefs were also carried out from 1996 to 2006 with the cooperation of the Nature Conservation, BTN Komodo and PT Putri Naga Komodo.
From 1999 to 2003, it conducted a rehabilitation program of coral reefs in seven sites of the park.
Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Established in 1980, initially the main purpose of the Park was to conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and its habitat.
However, over the years, the goals for the Park have expanded to protecting its entire biodiversity, both terrestrial and marine. In 1986, the Park was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, both indications of the Park's biological importance.
