NUMBER OF COMPANIES IN TURKISH FOOD-BEVERAGE SECTOR DOWN

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 21.04.2010 - The number of companies in the Turkish food and beverage industry dropped by 21.3 percent to 17,391 in 2009 compared to 2008.
Ilknur Menlik, director of corporate affairs of Turkish Federation of Food and Beverage Industry, delivered a speech in a meeting on the sector's 2009 inventory.
"Food industry production capacity has become 186.4 million tons. Meat and meat products sector is the one which has the highest production capacity with 42.5 million tons. Baked goods and feed industry followed meat products," Menlik said.
According to the figures of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), employment rate in the food and beverage sector increased by 107.4 percent in 2009 compared to 2008, she said.
Menlik said 44 foreign companies began to operate in the food and beverage sector in Turkey in 2009 and the number of foreign companies in the sector reached 420.
