UK-based analyst welcomes Iran’s nuclear disarmament efforts

London, April 21, IRNA – The Tehran conference on nuclear disarmament would help Iran in the long-term garner support for its global disarmament efforts and ultimately isolates Israel and defuses some of the Western anti-Iran propaganda, a UK-based analyst says.

Mohammad Kamaali, from the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran, said the first international nuclear disarmament conference hosted by Tehran will help the Islamic republic in its nuclear-weapons-free-Middle-East initiative and establishes the country’s official stance.

“By being so vocal, Iran is trying to position itself at the top of a non-nuclear bloc that claims to stand against global injustice and tyranny. More pressures on Iran by the US often validate Iran’s stances,” Kamaali told IRNA when asked to comment on the impacts of the Tehran conference.

Referring to the recent review by the Obama administration of the US nuclear policy, he said any threat by the holders of atomic weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states is “illegal” under the NPT and the UN Charter.
In the new US Nuclear Posture Review, Obama has stated that the use of nuclear weapons against Iran is not ruled out—a policy many commentators imply to be an overt warning of attack.

“Threats of pre-emptive military attack are termed as “the Supreme Crime” by the tribunals that tried leaders of the Nazi Germany,” Kamaali said, adding that the United Nations is incapable of acting against such US threats.
He added that Obama has opened a “new front for his critics” by openly relying on nuclear weapons which could not “help his image in the long run”.

“The referral of Iran's file to the UNSC paved the way for sanctions resolutions. The immediate effect of sanctions is often felt by middle classes as well as the civil society. It will also hamper efforts of cultural exchange between Iran and the West.”

“The US nuclear policy paper released before the conference is now the official reference to the double standards that the West tries to implement against independent non-nuclear states. The US has made it quite clear that it proudly relies on nuclear weapons for political goals and does not intend to move towards complete disarmament, despite its legal obligations. This may kick start a new race for weapons and will ultimately weaken international institutions.”

Referring to a nuclear security conference recently held in Washington, Kamaali said it discredited US claims of concerns regarding the spread of nuclear weapons.
“The Washington conference was more a photo op in a US strategy to tackle Iran's nuclear programme outside the IAEA. However inviting nuclear outlaws such as Israel, Pakistan, India, South Korea and South Africa has not helped the conference's credibility at all."/end
