Jalali: New York NPT review conference a scene of confrontation

Tehran, April 20, IRNA - Rapporteur of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy, Kazem Jalali, said on Monday that the upcoming New York NPT review conference led by the US will be a scene of confrontation with countries which do not possess nuclear weapons.

Speaking to IRNA, he said in New York conference, the owners of nuclear weapons will seek to impose limits on other countries seeking peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Countries which do not have nuclear weapons are determined to find access to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, he underlined.

“I believe that Tehran international conference on disarmament of nuclear weapons and non-proliferation has formed a front to deal with the other front led by the US as well as those countries possessing nuclear weapons,” Jalali said.

The principled goals of NPT can be classified as peaceful nuclear energy for all countries, preventing countries from access to nuclear weapons and disarmament of nuclear weapons worldwide, he said, adding that none of the above has been materialized and this requires active role of those countries possessing nuclear weapons.

There are some 20,000 nuclear warheads in the world, he said, adding that according to the latest research conducted by a scientific institute affiliated to Harvard University there are about 220,000 kilograms of plutonium which could be used for production of 220,000 nuclear warheads in the world which would be very catastrophic, he said.

“Although the upcoming New York review conference aims to eradicate nuclear weapons but much to our regret they seek to restrict the rights of nations in making use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes,” Jalali said./end
