Thai PM reaffirms determination to resolve political crisis, return normalcy
BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reaffirmed his strong determination to resolve Thailand's political crisis and enforce the law effectively to deal with the Red Shirt protesters who continue to ignore the Emergency Decree and bring back normalcy to the country, even as the protesters themselves are set to put more pressure on the government on Tuesday.
The prime minister was interviewed on state-owned television stations at 9pm Monday night when he said he does not feel discouraged about resolving the problems. He also asserted that it is the responsibility of the government to reclaim the capital's commercial and shopping area at Ratchaprasong where protesters have camped since April 3.
Meanwhile, the government has deployed troops and police to protect Silom Road, a prime business district, from the protesters.
However, he said, the government could not give a date to say when the crisis would end but the authorities would try their best to deal with the problem as quickly as possible, most effectively and to minimise damage.
The premier said he would not put pressure against the responsible authorities but said that the goverment aimed to protect the country, and its democracy, and not let the country to move into anarchy, to become a land without laws.
The government has prepared to help the business sector and employees affected by the protest, he said.
Mr Abhisit also urged the public to be patient and have faith on the righteousnenss of what his administration is attempting to do.
Meanwhile, the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) said they will intensify their pressure against the government on Tuesday.
Mr Natthawut Saikua, a UDD core leader said the plan would be detailed at 10am just before the actions would be implemented. He claimed that the fresh movement would force Mr Abhisit to dissolve Parliament which was the triumph of the Red Shirt protesters.
Another UDD core leader, Jatuporn Prompan said that he received information about a Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) meeting chaired by Army Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda that confirmed that the Army chief has ordered removal of the Red Shirts from Ratchaprasong to end the protest within seven days.
Mr Jatuporn claimed that armed troops will be deployed and infiltrated in the group of protesters on the day that the military will disperse the protesters.
Gen Anupong had stressed that the operation must not fail, Mr Jatuporn said.
