UDD lawyer: 24 protest leaders will surrender May 15

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) -- A lawyer representing all 24 anti-government protest leaders with outstanding arrest warrants told a senior police officer here Saturday that his clients would surrender to police on May 15 as they need time to collect money to post as bail.

Lawyer Karom Poltaklang submitted a letter to Pol Maj-Gen Amnuay Nimmano, deputy Bangkok police chief, saying that the 24 United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders would turn themselves in to the police at 10am on May 15. The letter said the UDD leaders would not run away and they needed time to collect money to post as bail.

The letter said the reason that the 24 UDD leaders specified the exact date for the surrendering was to “prevent a chaos” and for the safety and benefits of all concerned parties. It also said the accused will deny police charges.

Mr Karom later told journalists that plan by the government to file terrorism charges against the UDD leaders was absurd as it must specify the accused persons, witnesses and evidence clearly. And if the government does file terrorism charges against them, the accused will counter the charges by filing lawsuits against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and those involved because “no criminal cases have ever taken place.”

Gen Amnuay reportedly told the lawyer after accepting the letter that the warrants were issued under the State of Emergency and the “accused persons have no rights to bail.”

Meanwhile, Tarit Pengdit, director-general of Department of Special Investigation (DSI), said 10 government-concerned units would discuss Sunday to follow-up progress on cases involving terrorism, threats against the government, hurting people and state officials which are handled by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

The 10 agencies include DSI, the Office of the Attorney General, the Royal Thai Army, the National Intelligence Agency, the National Security Council, the Royal Thai Police Special Branch, the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Central Investigation Bureau, the Judge Advocate General's Department and provincial police in many regions.

Other minor cases will be handled by Bangkok Metropolitan Police.

So far the number of total cases is still unknown as officials have started interrogating a number of witnesses.

Regarding a letter submitted by the opposition Puea Thai Party to the Board of Special Cases, chaired by Prime Minsiter Abhisit, objecting DSI to accept last

Saturday’s bloody violence as a special case, Mr Tarit said it was now too late because the agency had already accepted the case for a special consideration and legally the case could not turn into a normal case now. (TNA)
