Mottaki: Tehran confab seeking to promote int’l coop on disarmament

Tehran, April 17, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the ongoing international conference on disarmament and non-proliferation is the beginning of a process to promote cooperation among world nations on the issue of nuclear disarmament.
The foreign minister made the remarks here Saturday while addressing the inauguration of the two-day event which is taking place with participation of officials from about 60 countries.
He said the message of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the opening speech of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad indicated the importance Iran attached to the event and the issues to be discussed in it.
He also said the enthusiastic welcome the conference received from other countries also proved the degree of significance the issue had for the international community too.
Noting that Iran was a victim of terrorism and mass-killing weapons itself, Mottaki said these victims expected the participants to make efforts to bring to reality a world devoid of any mass-killing weapons and the nuclear arms in particular.
Some 14 foreign ministers, 10 deputy ministers and a group of representatives from international and regional organizations are present in the gathering./end
