Prince Naif opens Arab International Conference on Environmental
Riyadh, July 07, SPA -- On behalf of Vice Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, Prince Naif bin
Abdulaziz, the Interior Minister, patronized here yesterday the
inaugural ceremony of the first Arab International Conference and
Exhibition on Environmental Legislation.
The Three-day conference and exhibition are organized by the General
Presidency of Meteorology and Environmental Protection (PME) in
cooperation with the Arab League and the UN's environmental program.
A large number of thinkers and specialists in the environmental and
legislation spheres are participating in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Jordanian Minister of Environment Eng.
Khalid Al-Irani reviewed Jordanian experience in the field of
environmental protection.
On his part, Prince Turki bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz, the PME
President said a great attention was given to the environment in the
second half of the last century, and accordingly a number of
conferences were organized to discuss its problems.
He pointed out that most of the environmental problems lack
effective solutions.
He praised the great attention given by the Arab countries to this
problem, and said activation of the Arab legislations in this respect
requires political support and seriousness in implementing the
policies and national and regional programs.
Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz, then, delivered the following speech:
"In the Name of Allah - Most Gracious and Most Merciful and Peace
and Blessings on the last of the Prophets Mohammed and his
companions.
Dear Sirs:
This is a dignified occasion to sponsor the first Arab International
Conference on Environmental Legislation, on behalf of Vice Custodian
of the Two Holy Mosques, Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, who is
a leading pioneer of environmental protection not only at the
national level but also at the world-wide level. In fact, Prince
Sultan was presented with international prizes in recognition of his
outstanding and ground-breaking works in the global environment
service. Prince Sultan recognized, since long back, the importance of
environment for the human life and understood the risks resulting
from improper dealings and exposing environment to danger.
His view reflects the reality of the position of Islam and its interest in the environment surrounding humanity as a source of life, continuity and tenderness. Thus, Allah Almighty has ordained not to do mischief on earth.
"So Eat and drink of the sustenance provided by Allah, and do
not do evil or mischief on the (face of) earth (Surah-2 Verse-60)."
Not only this, Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him) also addressed
the safety and hygiene of human beings, promised award from Allah for
those who lift garbage left on the roads.
Dear brothers,
The one who follows up research and environmental studies indicators
and expectations, are aware of the result of excessive uses and
misuse of environmental resources and its components including
human-induced global warming, which unfortunately is threatening
human existence.
We all remember the feelings of pain caused by shocking earthquake
and massive tsunami which struck East Asia, the subsequent
devastating environmental disasters which left thousands dead; more
(people) distressed and affected as well as caused sizable damages to
the environment and properties.Prince Naif said:" Brothers, if we believe what happened was in the
knowledge of Allah and according to His Sublime Planning, then we
recognize that human behavior has its impact as regards the damage to
the environment.
Thus people on this planet, now should start rationalizing their
behaviors toward environment, work actively and take necessary
measures in preventing such huge disasters and don't stay idle as
spectators of events and only act when disasters fall.
Dear brothers,
Although the environmental legislations are important,
they are alone not enough unless preceded with sequential efforts to
enhance environmental education for the individual and the community
as it will facilitate all educational, intellectual and media organs
to contribute positively in spreading the culture of dealing with the
environment and the rationalization of human behavior to work towards
such legislations in order to enforce them.
These legislations can work in an intellectual community that
believes in its importance and believe in the significance of
cooperation with the concerned bodies for achieving everyone's
interest in protecting our environment from any threatening harm or
danger.
Brothers,
We look forward with great optimism the results and outcomes of this
important conference to form a vision towards environmental
legislation which we hope will lead with its credibility and
objectivity into action in place to protect our environment from the
threats, especially those in the forefront that had been mentioned
earlier in terms of human mischief and ignorance.
As we are all in the same boat, i.e. the Planet Earth, any harm or
damage to this planet will not have limited negative impact on a
country or a community without the other, consequently everyone will
suffer and loose, so we have to work with a team spirit. When we
realize this real goal at all official and civil level, our civilized
and responsible treatment to environment will reflect our duty
towards future generations and the future of environment.
Finally, I thank you all for your presence and asked Allah Almighty
to bless this conference with all success that would be good for the
human beings, their happiness and safety of the environment.
Peace be upon You all.--SPA
