RI GETS EXPORT QUOTA OF 5,000 TONS OF FRESH BANANA TO JAPAN

Jakarta, July 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has obtained an export quota of 1,000 tons of fresh banana annually to Japan with zero percent import duty until 2012, a senior official said here on Sunday.
The export quota is part of the economic partnership agreement (EPA) Indonesia and Japan have reached to be implemented as of July 1, 2008.
So far, Japan had imposed a 17 percent import duty on fresh banana it was importing from Indonesia.
External Trade Affairs Director General of the Trade Ministry Diah Maulida said that the quota of 1,000 ton per year did not however restrict Indonesia's banana exports to only 1,000 tons annually.
"The exports are not limited to 1,000 tons only. Indonesia may export more than 1,000 tons annually but the surplus will be subjected to import duty," the director general said.
Diah said that the Ministry of Trade had issued a trade regulation on the export of fresh banana which would enjoy the zero percent import duty.
"On the quota sharing by exporters the director general will provide a provision through a letter of decision," she said.
Besides banana, Indonesia also obtained an export quota of 100 tons of fresh pineapples with zero import duty. The quota will increase by 50 tons a year until 2012, she said.
