88 MILY PERSONNEL READY TO STAND TRIAL OVER ATTACK ON POLICE POST
Maluku, Indonesia, July 5 (ANTARA) - Chief of the Pattimura Regional Military Command Maj. Gen. Rasyid Qurnaen Aquary said 88 military personnel suspected of attacking the Central Maluku district police post on February 2 will soon stand trial at the local military tribunal.
"I have already checked with the military police of the regional military command (Pomdam) and the military tribunal (Odmil) that the 88 suspects will be tried starting on July 14," he said on Saturday.
The move was aimed at meeting the public demand for the disclosure of the incident that left three non-commissioned officers dead and four others seriously injured, he said.
Forty-eight houses, three offices and one detention room were torched in the incident.
If the military personnel were proven guilty of attacking the police post they would be sternly dealt with or fired, if possible, because their misdeeds had tarnished the image of the Indonesian Army (TNI AD), he said.
"Frankly speaking, I don't want to see a recurrence of the misdeeds that have tarnished the image of the TNI AD, either in Maluku or North Maluku. Therefore, any military personnel found guilty of committing wrongdoings will certainly be subject to sanction or punishment according to the standing procedure," he said.
He said the military authorities had dismissed commander of the Kabaressy infantry battalion Lt. Col. Donny Hutabarat on February 6 in connection with the incident.
