Bangkok workers clean Ratchadamnoen after protesters vacate
BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA/ AGENCIES) - As the Red Shirts have vacated Phan Fa Bridge to regroup at Ratchaprasong intersection, some 2,000 workers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration started deep cleaning of the area around Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue.
City employees cleared makeshift tents, cleaned roads and checked closed circuit televisions as well as electric lights in order to repair out-of-order equipment immediately.
Still, the workers will later clear the surrounds around the Democracy Monument and destroyed army vehicles will be moved out after all protesters vacate the area, which is expected to open to traffic on Thursday.
Eight bodies of protesters killed during the clashes were moved from the monument to Hualumphong temple for religious rites.
The Red Shirt leaders decided to reduce the two rally sites to only one at Ratchaprasong’s business and shopping area for the unity of the protest and the convenience of guards to provide security for protesters.
The lines of protesters at Ratchaprasong area have extended on all roads leading to the Ratchaprasong intersection, the center of the rally site.
All shopping malls including Siam Paragon, Siam Centre and Big C have closed indefinitely.
Responding to the escalating tension, a group of people in multi-coloured shirts gathered at Victory Monument for the second time, demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit not to dissolve the Parliament and called on the Red Shirts to end protest in order to bring peace to the country.
The group also urged commuters around the monument to support their campaign against House dissolution and the Red Shirts’ protest.
Meanwhile, Chumpol Silpa-archa, leader of the Chart Thai Pattana Party--one of coalition party members--reaffirmed his backing of the Abhisit administration. He said he supported the constitution amendment before the House Dissolution but he suggested that the timeframe of the House dissolution should be within six months.
"The coalition parties are supporting the government. We support them in staying put to resolve the crisis," Chumpol was quoted by French news agency AFP. (TNA)
