N SUMATRA STILL TO ENJOY RICE SURPLUS THIS YEAR

Medan, N Sumatra, July 5 (ANTARA) - North Sumatra still will enjoy a rice surplus this year with dry unhusked rice production estimated at 3,274,061 tons, an official said.

"The dry unhusked rice production represents a 0.25 percent increase compared to 2007 when it was 3,265,834 tons," Head of the North Sumatra Office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Alimuddin Sidabalok said on Saturday.

The rise in dry unhusked rice production was the result of the national rice program through which the production of every hectare of paddy field in the province rose 21 kg to 4.374 tons per hectare, he said.

With the dry unhusked rice production forecast of 3.274 million tons this year, North Sumatra would remain the rice supplier in the country, he said.

Last year, North Sumatra contributed 5.71 percent of the country's rice production.
