Number of dead in clashes rises to 23; Investigators to meet Friday

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- The number of fatalities from last Saturday’s violent clashes between the government's security forces and red-clad anti-government protesters here has risen to 23, with 195 persons remaining in hospital, according to a statement issued by Erawan Medical Centre early Wednesday.

The statement said of the total 195 wounded now being treated at 15 hospitals in the Thai capital, 14 are now under close doctors’ supervision in intensive care units.

Emergency services said earlier the number of wounded from the day-long confrontation and clashes at Ratchadamnoen Avenue was 863 persons, including more than 200 soldiers.

Police are investigating the clashes between the combined government forces and protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), who are demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve the House immediately and leave the country, but additional arrest warrants for UDD protesters have been issued.

A 34-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against three protesters who smashed her car on Monday while they paraded coffins of their slain comrades around central Bangkok.

Another suit was filed by a taxi driver who complained to police that he was assaulted by a group of Red Shirt protesters.

Pol Maj-Gen Amnuay Nimmano, deputy Bangkok police chief, said the agency's investigators would meet Friday to follow-up on developments in the cases.

He had earlier urged the wounded and families of the soldiers and protesters who died during the clashes to testify to police. He said all vital information is expected to be compiled by this Friday.

Reuters journalists and camerapersons, witnessing and recording the incident met the police Wednesday to give information and statements for further investigation.

Police have also urged witnesses who filmed video sequences or still pictures of the bloody clashes between security officials and anti-government protesters Saturday to present the photos and to give statements as the authorities now believe that “terrorists” with military weapons mingled with the protesters on that day and fired on the crowd, said the senior police officer.
