Mother, two sons die in Qld car crash

A mother and her two sons are dead after their sedan and a truck crashed head-on on
the Warrego Highway in southeast Queensland.
A 45-year-old woman and her sons, aged 17 and eight, died at the scene after the car
they were in was torn apart.
They were passengers of an east-bound car on the Warrego Highway when it and a
B-Double truck travelling in the opposite direction collided at Crowley Vale near
Gatton at around 2.20pm (AEST) on Monday.
The driver of the sedan, a 46-year-old man, has been airlifted to hospital with
serious but non-life threatening injuries, police say.
Acting Inspector Peter McFarlane told reporters it was amazing he survived.
"They (the family) didn't stand a chance. It's remarkable one person has survived
this accident," he said.
The truck driver is believed to have been taken to hospital and treated for shock.
Member for Lockyer Ian Rickuss said the horrible tragedy happened at a known black
spot.
"I've spoken to police and it appears the car has failed to negotiate a bend and has
crossed a median strip and into the path of the truck," Mr Rickuss told AAP.
"It's too early to know the reason for the accident but it is a dangerous stretch."
The Liberal National Party (LNP) member said the highway was in desperate need of an
upgrade adding he wanted a safety audit done along a stretch of the highway from
Gatton to Glenore Grove, which includes the triple fatality site.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has also previously called for upgrades to the
motorway outside Ipswich, labelling its condition a disgrace.
Police were still at the scene at 7pm (AEST) with both traffic lanes still closed
between Forest Hill Fernvale Road and the Gatton College.
