IFES organizes symposium on funding political parties

SANA'A, July 05 (Saba)- International Federation for Election Systems (IFES) organized in cooperation with the committee of Parties Affairs a symposium on Saturday over funding for growing democracies in the 21st century participation of political parities and civil society organizations.

In the opening session of the symposium, the Minister of Parliament and Shoura Council Affairs Khaled al-Sharif said that the topic of the political funding for parties needs for mechanisms to organize getting support and how to use it by parities for determined electoral purposes.

Al-Sharif highlighted the IFES initiative within framework of transparency and credibility. He affirmed importance of the practical dialogue for political and democratic life in any world system, pointing out to the current discussion over constitutional
amendments which were suggested by president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al-Sharif made it clear that the ministry is to study law of political parties.

For his part, the IFES director in Sana'a Biter Williams said that the symposium aims at focusing on insurances of fair competition for coming elections. He called on participants to look at future and find out steps that insure development of the Yemeni democracy. The American ambassador to Sana'a Stephen Seche participation of different parties is a prove that the coming elections would reflect desire of the Yemeni people through by participation of all.

He added that the one of the key problems facing fair elections is negative impact due to funds. "We are in United States suffering form this problem as well," the ambassador said. He affirmed important of funding out a plan for monitoring funding resources and they should be official. The participants discussed several papers on Yemeni laws and experiences of world countries in field of political funding.
